A FRIENDLY REMINDER to CLEAR SNOW FROM EXTERIOR VENTS AROUND YOUR HOME- As you dig out your driveway, walkways and decks, don't forget about clearing snow away from furnace and dryer vents, as well as the furnace fresh air intakes and exhaust pipes, gas meters, septic “candy cane” pipes and away from a permanent generator. Remember to check CO alarms too!
" Many gas furnaces and water heaters vent out the side of homes only a few feet from the ground. If covered with snow, they will no longer be able to vent properly or supply fresh air to the unit. While most high-efficiency furnaces will automatically shut off when vents are plugged, older models may not, causing a potentially lethal buildup of carbon monoxide (CO) gas within your home. If your furnace is not working, check to see that the exhaust vent is clear of snow. Shovel a three-foot area around those vents and your gas meter, and check them regularly to make sure they stay clear. In addition, be sure to check CO alarms within your home to make sure they are operating properly. CO alarms should be installed on every floor and outside of every bedroom in your home" - Home Safety TipsSee More
